Where did the time go?

It's hard to believe it's been 4 years since @cheyennefolkhair joined Obsidian Hair Studio when it was just the two of us.

After less than a year working by myself, I knew I couldn't do it much longer. My studio was getting busy, and I missed educating & mentoring.

Enter Cheyenne. She trusted me with her career and that's not something I ever take lightly when someone decides to work with me, especially if they entrust me with their education & training.

I'm so proud of the woman & leader you've become and I know you're only getting started.

What's it like being a client of an Artist who works with a Mentee?

It's like being in a hair classroom while having two silly geese yap with ya about your hair & life.

We also don't double book. So that means less stress for our Artists and who they are working with and a more chill experience for you.

Our mentors work with our mentees through a 4 month journey to learn more about working in the salon, working with clients, color work, cutting, extensions & growing their clientele.

They teach weekly classes and share their knowledge freely. We don't believe in gatekeeping any knowledge. Just like our show & shares that we host monthly.

"I’m learning more razor cutting since it’s a service I want to offer. I’ve learned how to perfect curtain bangs and I’ve gotten better at doing layered cuts. I’ve been practicing design with color. Also have been doing more highlights chunky and regular [highlights too]."

A few weeks ago, Onyx and @alt.hairlab hung out with @cheyennefolkhair to learn some razor cutting techniques.

We've been growing!!

We have one new Hair Artist @paintmelikemaayan
She's in the studio on Tues & Wed and will be taking models this month!! Cuts, Colors & Blowouts!

And we also have two new Mentee Hair Artists. They're under training with a Mentor 2-3 days a week and will be taking models for the next 4 months for ALL the things for a discounted rate of $30 per hour on Mondays and Wednesdays.

@ryanethehairslayer & @hairbyionaa fit right in!! And they've done such an amazing job already after their first week working with their mentors @design_the_skyy & @cheyennefolkhair

Michaella has been in the hair game for a bit but she's not settling just yet.

Megan wanted to share her experience with y'all:

"As a lifelong neurodivergent student in the role of a teacher, I found myself filtering out a lot of the extra “noise” that made learning difficult for me.

The best teachers I’ve had gave me the essentials and allowed me to build my knowledge in steps. I found myself utilizing that methodology rather than providing an abundance of information all at one time.

Start small and practice the basic steps until they’re second nature."

Becoming a mother can create opportunities for us to blossom 🌸 in ways we didn't know we could.

We asked Maria about how motherhood has changed her & her career, here's what she had to say:

"When I decided I wanted to be a hairstylist, I also knew I would want to be a mom. I thought it would be easy to do both.

Then I became a stylist and saw some struggle and got it in my head I would have to sacrifice something as I watched others do.

Now I am not only a hairstylist but also a mom, I’ve been afraid a lot about sacrificing anything for the other. I want to be an amazingly present mom and this badass hair artist making amazing hair & doing all the wonderful things we can in this industry. 🎨

I can absolutely do both. It takes some effort and work but that’s the beauty of being a stylist, I can be a badass there and at home.

When I went on surprise early leave, I still had my job, clients, coworkers there to support me, and come back to. When I returned from leave, I had nothing but support. 💖

I can prioritize the needs in my life and wants. I can build my career around my life. That is the beauty of this, I can be a working mom and it can look any way I choose it to."

Being with Obsidian for almost 4 years now- where do I even start? The amount of growth and change the salon has seen is incredible. Erin has such a determined attitude, and will manifest pretty much anything she sets her mind to. We’ve grown from 2 to over 20 people and it’s been amazing to watch. I’ve been given opportunity upon opportunity to try new things, be a leader, and educate others- which is something I didn’t think would be possible for me when I first started doing hair less than 4 years ago. One of my favorite things to see when I come into the salon is watching my coworkers create art, help each other, and give their clients amazing experiences. Obsidian has become a community that I cannot see myself not being a part of for a very long time.

Systems = Control or so I thought.

I’ve always used systems in my day to day life.
Whether working through school work, or managing household duties as an adult.

I even included them when I was working in my suite by myself but for some reason, I thought the more people I would hire, then I wouldn’t need them.

Haha boy oh boy, was I wrong! I had hoped that everyone else would feel empowered by the freedom to “do the right thing” but salon life, as we know it, is very GRAY.

Enter my own and my staff’s frustration with a lack of definitive systems. So I’ve been working hard over the last 4 months to create clarity when it comes to how our salon functions.

When my ADHD is functioning the best, it’s creating and following systems. And if I want to do anything for my team, it will remove barriers, not create more.

1) It helps our staff know what kind of experience you would like.

You get to choose your drink or what essential oil you want. Make it what you want.

2) It helps reduce anxiety for our team who are on the spectrum.

It helps by informing them about any details for day of like tme constraints you may have and you’re able to add pictures so they know exactly what look you’re trying to go for.

3) It provides a non-confrontational way for communication for those who have anxiety.

The salon experience can be stressful for some and sometimes verbal communication isn’t your fave.

4) It enables the salon experience to be for all.

We offer silent appointments for those who don’t want to chat it up or a private one in our suite if you prefer for whatever reason.
